"I was hired to do the writing, inter
alia, why would I go out to buy writing services?"
Three good reasons for using writing services:
1. Tick tock, tick tock...
That "inter alia" can be very demanding of your time. You know the
drill - trade show coming up, product documentation needs updating, a load
of extra meetings out of the blue, and the deadline for that article you promised
the editor of Industry Widgets is fast coming up (let her down and you can
kiss any future coverage good-bye). Get someone in who can hit the ground
running - pretty important this, as otherwise you'll have to spend more time
to brief a neophyte - and deal with the rest as best you can.
2. You don't speak journalese
- or maybe you do
You know your limitations... After all, journalism school doesn't spend much
time in turning unique selling propositions into selling copy, and copywriting
classes don't prepare you for generating press releases - and articles in
Industry Widgets have less to do with writing than following editorial guidelines.
3. This you have to see!
Everybody knows how to put together a PowerPoint presentation - right? Sure,
if all you want to do is put up a few bulleted items and be done with it.
But what if you want to go beyond the pedestrian - for a trade show, for example,
or for a sales conference? Now you're stepping into that gray area between
art, copy, and technique. It may be exactly the kind of thing you're most
comfortable with - but if you're not...
